We left the River Shannon at Leitrim and set out on a cruise to Lough Erne, via the towns of Ballinamore and Ballyconnel. These two great waterways are linked together by a series of canals, rivers and lakes called The Shannon Erne Waterway (or SEW if you prefer acronyms!)
Originally this waterway was called The Ballinamore and Ballyconnel Canal after the two main towns along its course.
This waterway was restored to navigation in 1994 and it is a kind of high tech waterway with everything being operated by a smart card.
The river Shannon is a livelier waterway in terms of the traffic and I thing in terms of pub life too. That’s not to say you won’t find great pubs on your journey to lough Erne, you certainly will.
Lough Erne is our destination but we are enjoying the cruise and we try to visit as many ports as we can along the way. From Keshcarrigan we call into the very pretty Kiltybardan Lough on the way to Ballinamore. Although the strong wind makes certain we won’t stay too long!
We only have two canal locks on our cruise and Marion makes short work of them with the smart card. No need to work up a sweat here! We didn’t meet any other boats on this leg of the journey but bear in mind that this was recorded in the middle of April and it was unseasonably cold. I’m really enjoying this boating trip and looking forward to Lough Erne.
