Clonmacnoise and Athlone on the river Shannon

This cruise on the Shannon from Athlone downriver to Clonmacnoise is normally an easy journey. Our first problem was trying to get the boat out of the marina in Athlone. The current was so strong it really made

what would normally be a standard manoeuvre into a much more challenging experience. Still we got it got the boat out without bumping anything. The trip down river to Clonmacnoise was exciting because the high water levels make it so much easier to wander off course with out realising it. I knew of one lad who once accidentally passed over a barbed wire fence and of course it entangled on his propeller. There was a lot of expletives and effort employed before he was freed!
