Bridges on the River Shannon and the plot to blow them up & we visit Athlone Castle.

I called this episode Bridges on the River Shannon and the plot to blow them up, because it seems to be an apt description. We take a look at the famous

Athlone Castle overlooking the river Shannon in the centre of Athlone town. But before that we visit Battlebridge at the northern end of the Shannon to check out a little oddity. Then on our way back to Athlone we call into Rooskey and Tarmonbarry to see some more strange structures and we discover what they were built for.

That’s where the bridges come into it, the river Shannon is famous for it’s many arched stone bridges. Many of them are works of art. Well they are to a river anorak like me!
