Lecarrow Canal
Come with us as we cruise from Lanesborough heading south on the river Shannon across lough Ree to the village of Lecarrow. With amazing views of Lough Ree in beautiful sunshine as well as the beautiful Lecarrow canal.
The village of Lecarrow rests up a short length of canal off Lough Ree in the centre of Ireland’s river Shannon. The village has two pubs, one shop as well as a restaurant. It really hasn’t changed at all in the past twenty years and that’s one of it’s attractions.
I was curious to know why this village needed to build this canal to link itself with the nearby lake and river. As it turns out a newly erected sign in the harbour provided all the answers.
In addition to the above Lecarrow also has a quarry, and the town of Athlone further down the river needed stone to build a weir, a lock as well as the magnificent four arched bridge.
Lecarrow harbour is as pretty a harbour as you will find anywhere and a wonderful haven after a day spent out on the lake, which can be quite choppy in anything above a force four wind.
